The RMFAB announce the opening of the Spilliaert Room since 21 May 2025 as follows:

This part of the museum regularly shows new ‘focus’ displays of modern artworks on paper (19th century – today). Because of their fragility, the duration of the presentations is limited and the light is dimmed.

The artwork of Léon Spilliaert (Ostend 1881 - Brussels 1946), produced almost exclusively on paper, has a prominent place in the collection of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (RMFAB). Most of it was acquired directly from the artist and his family. This room, which is dedicated to modern works on paper, is named after him as a mark of recognition.

Thanks to important donations and bequests, as well as a targeted acquisition policy, all periods of his oeuvre are represented in the RMFAB by impressive works. A different selection of works will be on show with each new presentation in this room. Spilliaert’s work will be in dialogue with that of other artists in the collections. This dialogue will begin with a #Focus1 on the research project on exploration and innovation in Belgian art on paper (1918-1950).
